Box Office Battle: 'The LEGO Movie 2' expected to build to top spot

Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.

LEGO MOVIE 2 EXPECTED TO TOP BOX OFFICE: AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros' release of "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part" is opening this weekend in over 4,300 locations, including showings in 2D, 3D, and IMAX (IMAX). It has already earned $2.1M in Thursday night previews. The LEGO sequel, starring the voice talents of Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett, is expected to win the weekend with a domestic opening in the range of $50M-$55M. The first "LEGO Movie" debuted with a $69M opening weekend back in February 2014, and went on to gross over $257M.

WHAT MEN WANT, COLD PURSUIT, THE PRODIGY ALSO OPENING: Viacom (VIA, VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's comedy "What Men Want," starring Taraji P. Henson, earned $1.25M in Thursday night previews. While the studio said it expects an $18M-$20M weekend, Box Office Mojo is more optimistic, seeing the film opening over $21M and as high as $26M.

Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B) and Summit's action thriller "Cold Pursuit," starring Liam Neeson and Emmy Rossum, is expected to earn $9M-$10M in its opening weekend, but the film could be negatively affected by Neeson's controversial comments made during a recent interview while promoting the movie.

The other major release this weekend is Orion Pictures' horror film "The Prodigy," which is opening at over 2,500 theaters and expected to gross from $7M-$9M.
